ABOUT
I started out as a graphic designer, which was unfortunate because I quickly discovered I didn’t really enjoy graphic design.
During my first internship I was getting dangerously close to becoming surplus to requirements, but I’d started messing around with After Effects and something clicked. Motion felt completely different. I became slightly obsessed with figuring out how things moved, how they could be built, and how much further I could push an idea once it wasn’t stuck on a page.
For about a year I spent most evenings staying behind in the office watching After Effects tutorials and trying things out until stupid o’clock. So I suppose my career was built on a healthy mix of curiosity, stubbornness and the looming threat of needing to become useful.
These days I work mainly across Cinema 4D, Redshift and After Effects, moving between 3D, animation, simulation and whatever else a project needs.
I’m based in Manchester, but I’ve worked remotely for years and I’m very happy keeping it that way.
The part of the job I enjoy most is finding the angle that wasn’t necessarily written in the brief. Taking the core idea, pulling it apart a little, then rebuilding it into something more visual, unexpected or memorable without losing sight of what the work actually needs to do. I’m much more interested in interpreting a brief than simply decorating one.
